Our CIUSSS’s award-winning initiative on Value-based Health Care (VBHC) for colorectal cancer is now the subject of a report aimed at guiding and inspiring others in the healthcare system.

The report was launched at the JGH on October 13, marking the culmination of a two-year effort led by Karine Lepage, Associate Director of Nursing—Oncology, and Eva Villalba, Executive Director of the Quebec Cancer Coalition.
This was the first large-scale Value-Based Health Care project in Canada involving a complex trajectory such as cancer treatment. Its success means it could be replicated elsewhere, the report says.
The project demonstrated that Value-Based Health Care is beneficial both to patients and the entire healthcare network, according to the report. It defines “value” as an improvement in health outcomes and patient experience relative to costs over the care trajectory.
Lucie Tremblay, Associate CEO of CIUSSS West-Central Montreal, said the findings grew out of “exceptional collaboration” among healthcare professionals at our CIUSSS. The results demonstrate that to create value in healthcare, it’s crucial to take the needs and expectations of users into account, she added.
“By taking care of people, measuring the results on a continual basis and adapting our practices, we’ll be able to transform not only cancer care but the entire healthcare system in Quebec,” Ms. Tremblay told those who attended the launch, including senior CIUSSS leaders and several team members involved in the project.
The Canadian College of Health Leaders awarded our CIUSSS the 2024 Recognition in Delivering Value-Based Health Care for the VBHC model in colorectal cancer.
