Supervisors, preceptors and those offering a clinical support role (PECs) are essential partners in health care, ensuring that recruits feel welcome and supported in their new jobs. And now, thanks to a joint initiative by the Directorates of Nursing and Rehabilitation and Multidisciplinary Services, more clinicians across our CIUSSS are getting the tools they need to take on this role.
After successfully launching workshops for nurses last year, the Nursing Directorate partnered with the Rehabilitation and Multidisciplinary team to adapt the training and offer it to participants from both directorates this spring.
Preceptors and people in a clinical support role are experienced staff who act as educators, mentors and coaches by providing guidance and supervision to new recruits and students. Their role is more important than ever as our CIUSSS and other healthcare institutions aim to recruit and retain staff.
“It’s hard to be a preceptor. With these workshops, we hope they feel supported in their challenging role,” says Tracey Lang, Senior Nursing Advisor, who led a committee to set up the workshops with Nursing Advisor Peggy Lechasseur.
The attendees at the workshops in April and May got tips on topics such as welcoming strategies, conflict resolution and effective feedback. Participants then broke off into groups, facilitated by professionals from both directorates, to put what they learned into practice through games, role playing, discussion of cases and sharing stories.
More workshops are planned for the fall with the aim of including people in a clinical support role from various directorates.
