The Specialized Approach to Senior Care (AAPA, for Approche adaptée à la personne âgée ) at the JGH continues to grow, with the Emergency Department joining the program in 2025. This expanded collaboration strengthens a hospital-wide network of teams dedicated to preventing deconditioning and promoting patient-centred care for seniors.
At the AAPA Annual Awards Ceremony on March 26, the ED was recognized for its contribution to this shared effort in improved care for senior patients.
As a primary point of entry for many patients, the ED plays a pivotal role in supporting senior patients’ mobility, autonomy and safe transition, whether to an inpatient unit, back home or to a long-term care setting.
For the past decade, units throughout the hospital have been instrumental in enacting AAPA principles and practices through coordinated efforts. The other teams honoured at the AAPA event were Family Medicine, Orthopedics, Medicine, Geriatrics, Alternative Level of Care, Surgery and Neuroscience.
