Congratulations to the members of the teaching team in the JGH Emergency Medicine (EM) Simulation Centre, whose work has earned them a Faculty Award for Teaching Innovation from the McGill Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Since the launch of the pace-setting Simulation Centre in June 2023, the program’s educators have trained residents, nurses and respiratory therapists to work together as a multidisciplinary team in a hospital-based simulated space. The Centre provides a safe learning environment in which the teams practice treating a lifelike manikin in simulation scenarios based on real-case experiences of patients with complex, life-threatening and often rare medical conditions. This exposure allows them to gain valuable practical insight into crises situations without any risk to real patients.
The peer-to-peer teaching environment also incorporates extensive debriefs following the exercises, highlighting effective strategies and also proposing areas for improvement, to best prepare the participant and observer learners for real-world emergency situations.
