We’re all committed to best practices when caring for our patients, residents and clients, but how about when it comes to the environment? Our CIUSSS also does its share to ensure the environmental sustainability of our daily activities.
On the occasion of Quebec Waste Reduction Week from October 21 to 27, our CIUSSS’s Sustainable Development team showcased a few of our network’s new and ongoing projects, introducing resourceful ways of protecting the environment.
Here are highlights from this past year:
- The Logistics Department integrated eco-responsible criteria into the CIUSSS purchasing policy, favouring reduction at source, reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal only as a last resort
- Food Services donates surplus food from Mount Sinai Hospital and the Donald Berman Jewish Eldercare Centre to community organizations, with both sites combined having send nearly 1,500 meals over the past year
- A composting program collecting organic material has been instituted at Saint Andrews Residential Centre and Mount Sinai Hospital, in coordination with the City of Montreal and Côte Saint-Luc
- Medical equipment from the Jewish General Hospital and furniture items have been donated through the Collaboration Santé International organization, destined for health centres in developing countries or community organizations in the territory served by our CIUSSS
- The Housekeeping team has installed dozens of additional recycling bins at the JGH, with new instructional posters customized for each department, as part of an ongoing waste management optimization project
