Promoting good treatment practices in long-term care residences

Mar 11, 2025

Residents in our long-term care centres spend their daily lives in their living environment, or milieu de vie. So it’s important to create a culture and environment of good treatment among the teams who provide their care, as well as among family members and the residents themselves.

To promote these goals, events were organized in February at two of our SAPA sites—the Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre and the Saint Andrew Residential Centre—to launch the project Approach to promoting good treatment in long-term care facilities.

The strategies shared at the events were developed over the past year by the Domain of Expertise to Counter Mistreatment of Older Adults team from CREGÉS (Centre for Research and Expertise in Social Gerontology) and Sabrina Lessard, an institutional researcher at CREGÉS.

The events featured initiatives in good treatment practices, such as going at the resident’s pace, listening to them intently and showing them kindness, and offering other team members support in the course of their workday. The practices were showcased in various forms, including a photo exhibition, mural, video with testimonials from residents and employees, and a comic book, Journey to the Heart of Everyday Life, available for download as a PDF.

The initiative reflects our CIUSSS’s commitment to an exceptional user experience, which means going beyond a research-based, clinical expertise, to provide compassionate, humanizing care.

The project is a partnership with several directorates of our network, including the Support Program for the Autonomy of Seniors (with the participation of three sites), Academic Affairs and Research Ethics, and the Quality, Transformation, Evaluation, Valuation, Ethics and Virtual Care.
