Nurse Navigator Erika Martinez and a team in Geriatric Oncology at the JGH have been honoured with a 2023 Prix de cancérologie for an initiative that supports vulnerable seniors during their cancer treatments.
The prize was awarded in the category of Evolution of Practice at the annual conference of the Programme québécois de cancérologie on November 23.
“We receive this prize with great pride,” says Karine Lepage, Clinical Administrative Coordinator, Divisions of Medicine and Oncology. “This advance in the care of seniors during cancer treatment was accomplished thanks to leadership in nursing and multidisciplinary collaboration. I want thank all those who supported this project from near and far. Congratulations!”
The project uses questionnaires for patients aged 70 and older who have received a diagnosis of breast or gynecological cancer. The objective is to evaluate their needs, identify those who might be vulnerable, and offer personalized support as early as possible in the patients’ care trajectory.
“It’s important to evaluate the specific needs of our older patients to optimize their cancer experience,” said the text for the team’s presentation. “An evaluation in geriatric oncology can allow us to create a plan that takes the needs and vulnerabilities of the patient into account.”
Congratulations to the winners!
