Patients with a cardiac condition known as atrial fibrillation now have quicker access to care without having to visit the Emergency Department (ED). The new service was launched this week, with the expansion of the mandate of the Clinical Access Service (CAS).

The CAS is an innovative, nurse‑led clinic that, for the past several years, has been providing swift access to diagnostic imaging testing and treatment for patients with sub-acute or semi-urgent clinical conditions. Patients receive care with minimal delay as part of this outpatient service—based in the Medical Day Hospital at the JGH—while bypassing the often-congested ED.

The clinic, available only to patients with a referral, offers same- or next-business day follow-up to those with a broad range of conditions, from suspected blood clots to gallstones.

Family doctors, emergency physicians and nursing practitioners with qualified patients throughout the CIUSSS are urged to work with the CAS nursing team in providing timely, appropriate and individualized care.
